Lessons on Plastic Pollution and Sustainability

Explore valuable lessons on plastic pollution and practical steps toward sustainability.

Plastic Waste: A Global Problem

By composting, you’re:

Every year, the world produces over 400 million tons of plastic, with single-use plastics making up a significant portion. Sadly, much of this waste ends up in places it doesn’t belong.

In my travels, I’ve witnessed:

  • Beaches Smothered in Plastic: Beautiful coastlines littered with bottles, wrappers, and straws that wash ashore daily.
  • Burning Trash Piles: In many countries, plastic is burned as a form of waste management, releasing toxic chemicals into the air.
  • Rice Fields Polluted with Waste: In rural areas, plastic waste suffocates crops, harming local economies and ecosystems.

These sights aren’t just heartbreaking—they’re a call to action.

Baltimore is no stranger to challenges, but it’s also a city of resilience and innovation. While traveling, I couldn’t stop thinking about how these global issues mirrored our local ones. Like many U.S. cities, Baltimore faces the same struggles with waste management and plastic pollution, but it’s also home to incredible programs and people making a difference.Programs like the Baltimore Compost Collective and local initiatives for urban gardening show that sustainable solutions are possible. But like the countries I visited, Baltimore’s composting infrastructure is still growing, leaving many residents without access to facilities needed to properly dispose of so-called “compostable” products. This realization fueled my desire to create home-compostable solutions—products that break down easily in a backyard bin, making sustainability accessible no matter where you live.
